Overview
Intelligence and emotion combine in Jessica Rivera's performances, making her a favorite of today's most gifted composers. Her program is highlighted by Ātash Sorushān ("Fire Angels"), a new song cycle written for the soprano by Mark Grey, commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Based on original poetry by Niloufar Talebi, and featuring pianist Molly Morkoski and Ensemble Meme, the piece reflects on a transformed 21st-century world, conveying the larger universal themes of hope and peace. It will be heard in Berkeley soon after its long-awaited New York premiere in Carnegie Hall. Schumann's transcendent Frauenliebe und leben and Debussy's Ariettes oublieés complete the program.
