World Stage, Ana Moura, February 18, 2012

Overview

Portuguese vocalist Ana Moura has emerged as a leading voice of traditional fado with her captivating interpretations of her country's soulful answer to the blues. Already a star in Europe, the 25-year-old singer has become a leading performer of this poetic, deeply expressive idiom, simultaneously restoring her country's faith in its national cultural obsession and taking the art form in new directions with collaborations with such artists as Mick Jagger and Prince. "Moura's physical beauty is undeniable, but her mesmeric appeal radiates from within, even if you don't know a syllable of Portuguese. Her ability to alternately whisper, growl and ring like a silver bell are the hallmarks of a fine singer," says NPR Music.
