Dear Friends:
As we're getting ready to kick off our once in-a-lifetime Centennial Season this weekend with the American premiere of National Ballet of China's Raise the Red Lantern, I'd like to personally welcome you to an exceptional schedule of events at Cal Performances. We're thrilled to have you join us in celebrating this momentous occasion!
We have lots of remarkable events planned in this 100th year of presenting the best in dance, music, and theater, and I hope to be telling you a little more in-depth about some that are particular noteworthy for me in the coming months as part of a new series of email communications entitled From the Director. But to begin, I want to bring to your attention of number of notable things happening in general as we start the season.
Red Cross to Collect Donations at National Ballet of China and Mark Morris Dance Group Performances.
All of us here at Cal Performances are deeply saddened by the human tragedy resulting from Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast region. And so we hope that you'll join us in marking the beginning of our Centennial Season with a celebration of a different kind: a celebration of our spirit of community and compassion for our fellow Americans. If you are attending one of these performances, please consider making a much-needed donation to the Red Cross at the performance hall to benefit victims of the hurricane. Or, visit our web site home page and following the Upcoming article link to make donation online to the American Red Cross directly.
A Dream Come True: New Seats for Zellerbach Hall
For the past five years (at least!) it has been my fondest wish to improve the seating conditions in our biggest and busiest performance space and I can't tell you how thrilled I am to announce that this dream has finally come true just in time for the start of this very special season. Thanks to the generous support of the Zellerbach Foundation and with the support of the University, 2035 brand new comfortable seats await you in our premier venue! Learn more in Upcoming on our web site.
We're building a bus bridge while workers are building the Bay Bridge!
As many of you may have been hearing in the news, work on the Bay Bridge during the weekends of Sept. 16-18, 23-24, and Sept. 30 - Oct. 1 is expected to potentially result in traffic delays in the late evening hours, a development that concerns us greatly as it could affect our patrons on the nights of several of our performances. As a result, Cal Performances has arranged for special buses to ferry our patrons directly to and from the performance halls from the downtown Berkeley BART station during these time periods. Visit our web site for more information on the Cal Performances BART shuttle.
Parking Progress.
A grand season inspires one to think big and so I want to let you know that one of my primary goals this season is to continue to find new and creative ways to ease the parking situation for our patrons. We'll continue to keep you informed on our progress throughout the year but for now, let me draw your attention to two ways to consider looking at the parking problem a little differently this season.
To begin with, plan to make a complete evening out of it and join us here in Berkeley for dinner as well the performances. Many restaurants in the area offer reduced parking rates with dinner validation. (One of our newest Restaurant Rewards partners, Adagia, even offers free parking for your entire evening at Cal Performances when you join them for dinner!) Visit our web site for more information on Restaurant Rewards or validated parking in the Sather Gate garage.
Also, did you know that our Friends of Cal Performances donors at the Benefactor level and above have the ability this year to reserve parking in advance through Cal Performances directly? It's just one of the many good reasons to consider joining us as a donor during this special season. For more information, see Support Cal Performances on our web site.
Once again, thank you for being a part of our one and only Centennial Season! We look forward to seeing you often in the coming months.
Sincerely,

Robert Cole
Director, Cal Performances
