Creating remarkable
works of dance for over 20 years, Mark Morris is today at the height
of his artistic powers, recognized by artists, critics, and audiences
alike as one of the truly great choreographers of his time. Thanks,
in part, to his company's continuing annual residencies here, the
Bay Area has become known as the place to look for contemporary
dance performances of the highest caliber.
The Mark Morris Dance Group's repertory program
has changed in order to add a special preview performance of Morris'
brand new work V, set to
Schumann's Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44. While the work has its
official world premiere in November in London, the Mark Morris Dance
Group wanted to present the piece now, here in the United States,
and "most especially in the Bay Area, our second home,"
according to the company. The program will also feature the Bay
Area premieres of Dancing Honeymoon
(1998), and Peccadillos
(2000), a solo work performed by Morris himself.
Full of humor and larkish energy,
Dancing Honeymoon is set to a collection of 1930's era songs
by Gertrude Lawrence and Jack Buchanan, performed by Mark Morris
Dance Group Music Director Ethan Iverson, with accompaniment by
soprano Eileen Clark. Peccadillos,
a solo work featuring Morris, is set to children's piano pieces
by Erik Satie, performed by Iverson on toy piano. V
is set to Schumann's Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44, performed
by Lisa Lee and Andrea Schultz on violin, Jessica Troy on viola;
Wolfram Koessel on cello; and Ethan Iverson on piano.
The repertory set also features the return
of Morris' critically acclaimed The
Office, set to Dvorak's Five Bagatelles for String Trio and
Harmonium, Op. 47.
Program: Morris/
Peccadillos,
music by Erik Satie; Dancing
Honeymoon (Bay
Area premiere), set to popular
songs of the 1920s and 30s; The
Office, music by Dvorák;
V,
music by Schumann (preview
performance).
