Subscription Series: Music Before 1850 Series

A former member of the eminent Romanesca Trio, director of the distinguished Academy of Ancient Music, and celebrated soloist in his own right, Andrew Manze has become something of a Baroque celebrity, a virtuoso renowned as much for his unrivaled showmanship and outspoken views on performance as for his dazzling technique and superb musicianship. Indeed, the spontaneity and improvisatory freedom he brings to performance of the music of the 17th and 18th centuries have shattered preconceptions of early music, while earning him a mantel-full of awards, including a 1998 Grammy nomination and Harmonia Mundi's designation as Artist of the Year.

Program: Handel, Bach and their Models: Corelli/Sonata "da chiesa" in D major; Op. 5, No. 1; Bonporti/Inventione in G minor, Op. 10, No. 4; Handel/Suite in E major for solo harpsichord, "The Harmonious Blacksmith;" Handel/Sonata in D minor for violin and harpsichord, HWV 359a; Bach/Toccata and Fugue in A minor for solo violin, reconstructed from BWV 565 for organ in D minor; Corelli/Sonata "da chiesa" in C major, Op. 5, No. 3; Bach/Sonata in C minor for violin and obbligato harpsichord, BWV 1017h
