Silk
Road Project
| The Silk Road Project is presented

"Over 25 years of performing in different
parts of the world, I have become increasingly intrigued by the
migration of ideas among communities," says celebrated cellist Yo-Yo
Ma. In that spirit of cross-cultural exploration, Ma in 1998 established
the Silk Road Project
to study the ebb and flow of different cultural ideas along the
ancient network of trade routes that connected Europe to Asia. This
season, the ambitious project takes the form of 14 multicultural
festivals and programs hosted by major organizations in the United
States, Europe, and East and Central Asia. Cal Performances is honored
to be the only university-based presenter selected to participate
in this prestigious project.
Yo-Yo Ma & the Mark Morris Dance
Group
Yo-Yo Ma and Mark Morris return with
the world premiere of Silk Road, a work commissioned by Cal
Performances and Ma's boundary-transcending Silk Road Project.
The program also affords Bay Area audiences a second chance to experience
Morris' triumphant V, a work the San Francisco Chronicle
called "a masterpiece
a reminder of the comfort and happiness
great art can bring."
Program: World
Power music by Lou Harrison, performe Troy (viola), Yo-Yo Ma (cello), and Ethan Iverson(piano)
* Music commissioned by the Silk Road Project
