Inspired by the popularity
of City Center's Encores series in New York, musical theater veteran
Martin Charnin (creator of Annie
and winner of two Tony, seven Grammy, and three Emmy Awards), and
celebrated Broadway conductor/composer Keith Levenson joined forces
to create Curtain Up!, semistaged concert performances of the best
of Broadway musicals. In its debut outing, Curtain Up! brings George
and Ira Gershwin/George S. Kaufman's 1927 musical comedy
Strike Up the Band to Zellerbach
Hall. Featuring a score by one of the most influential and popular
of American composers, performed live by the Curtain Up! Orchestra,
and a cast featuring some of Broadway's fastest rising talents, Strike
Up the Band has all the sass, wit,
and sex appeal of the classic Broadway show.
