Series A
The distinctive
performance style developed by experimental director Tadashi Suzuki
revolutionized theater training for actors all over the globe, employing
traditional techniques within the context of the modern stage. The
ultimate expression of Suzuki's personal vision, The Suzuki Company
is renowned for its elegant, mystical, and intensely physical interpretations
of classical theater. In this Bay Area premiere, the Company performs
Dionysus,
Suzuki's groundbreaking adaptation of Euripides' The
Bacchae.
This blend of philosophy and stage-craft depicts the conflict between
the god Dionysus and King Pentheus of Thebes as a battle between
a religious sect and political authority, between a group's need
for control and the individual's right to freedom.
Suzuki Company, led by Artistic
Director Tadashi Suzuki, is the resident company of Shizuoka Performing
Arts Center (SPAC).
The North American tour of Suzuki
Company is organized by Japan Society, New York.
