During the reign of the Khmer Rouge, more than 90% of Cambodia's artists were killed by the regime, leaving a mere handful of survivors to preserve their devastated nation's cultural legacy. In this West Coast premiere production, 40 dancers and musicians from the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh prove the power of artistic creativity to triumph over extreme brutality. Wearing traditional gilded, brocaded costumes and temple-spired headdresses, these talented artists perform a variety of classical court and popular folk dances showcasing the finest of Cambodian repertoire, a chronicle of the historical traditions, religious practices, and spiritual values of an entire people.

Funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts.
