Join the adventurous
Kronos Quartet for a special celebration of the traditional Mexican
holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). In honor of
this festive time of remembering and rejoicing, Kronos will perform
selections from their recently released CD Nuevo, co-produced by
Grammy-Award winning Rock en Espanol producer Gustavo Santaolalla
of Amores Perros fame. This diverse collection of Mexican
music spans nearly 100 years and features new arrangements of original
works by Latin American composers ranging from Juan Garcia Esquival
to Rock en Espanol super-group Café Tacuba. The second half
of the program features Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz' s Altar
de Muertos, a staged piece exploring the ritual and meaning
of death in Mexico today.
Dia de los Muertos Community and
Memorial Altars
A community altar will be located on the stage where the audience
is welcome to place photographs of loved ones, flowers and other
offerings. A memorial altar commissioned by the Oakland Museum will
also be installed the Zellerbach Hall mezzanine.
