Tracing
its history back as far as 1609, the esteemed Stuttgart Ballet came
to new life in 1961 with the appointment of now legendary choreographer
John Cranko as ballet director. His 1962 staging of Romeo and
Juliet was considered a major critical and popular breakthrough
for the ensemble on the international dance scene. Today considered
one of the world's most illustrious companies, the Stuttgart has
been a showcase for the early works of such choreographers as Jirí
Kylián and William Forsythe, and under the recent direction
of Reid Anderson, the Stuttgart has presented no less than 14 world
and nine company premieres in its last three seasons alone. The
company performs the Bay Area premiere of Cranko's original staging
of Shakespeare's beloved tragedy of star-crossed lovers, "arguably
the best treatment of Prokofiev's celebrated ballet score,"
says Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times.
