Legendary jazz
drummer and bandleader Roy Haynes, illustrious elder statesman of
the jazz world, joins forces with four of the most distinctive and
adventurous voices on the contemporary scene to pay tribute to the
immortal Charlie "Bird" Parker. Father of the bebop movement
and consummate improvisationalist, Parker was arguably the greatest
saxophonist of all time and redefined how every jazz musician after
him would approach rhythm. Fifty years after performing on the legendary
live recording, Summit Meeting at Birdland, Haynes paid homage
to Parker by recreating the album's instrumental lineup on his 2001
release Birds of a Feather and in this program, guides his
dream band through the music that inspired his illustrious career.
At 76, eternally young Roy Haynes plays with the verve and passion
of a player half his age and in his hands, Bird's music is as alive
and exciting as ever.
