Flamenco the way it was meant to be experienced
While other flamenco enthusiasts around the country will be enjoying the sheer artistry and theatricality of one of the world's foremost flamenco companies in such prestigious — but large! — venues as the Hollywood Bowl and Lincoln Center Outdoors this summer, Madrid's highly acclaimed Noche Flamenca will be kicking off it's American tour in a slightly different manner here in the Bay Area: with a two week run on the stage of the intimate 500-seat Zellerbach Playhouse, June 24 - July 6th.

Noche Flamenca's extraordinary success arises from its profound understanding of the history and tradition of the art form. Within this unique core of virtuoso guitarists, singers and dancers, all aspects of flamenco—dance, music, and song—are interrelated and given equal weight in creating a true communal spirit within the company that is the heart and soul of flamenco. In addition, the company's repertory for this summer tour will feature dances inspired by the very birthplace of this passionate art form: Andalucia.

Centuries ago, the Romans, Moors, Jews, and nomadic Gypsies of Andalucia made this region of southern Spain a place of diverse cultures and ideas. But during the 15th – 17th centuries, the Spanish Inquisition oppressed and shattered this cultural peace, giving birth to the artistic expression known as cante flamenco, a "storm and exasperation of grief," that resonates within the soul even today. Led by artistic director Martin Santangelo and leading dancer Soledad Barrio, winner of the 2001 "Bessie" Award for outstanding creative achievement, Noche Flamenco will perform a program that includes works inspired by these deeply felt musical and dance traditions, including Solo de Cante, Tientos Solea por Bulerias, featuring Antonio Rodriguez "El Chupete," and Solo de Musica. Additional works on the program, La Plaza and Vavien, feature the choreography of Artistic Director Martin Santangelo and original music compositions by Jesus Torres.

For more information on this engagement, or to purchase tickets on-line, see the Noche Flamenca event page.

WELLS FARGO Expands Sponsorship at Cal Performances

Just as Cal Performances connects the world's finest artists with Bay Area audiences, WELLS FARGO and its trusted trademark, the stagecoach, for over 150 years have stood for connecting goods, information, mail and money, and connecting people.

As a Cal Performances Corporate Partner, WELLS FARGO has shown a strong commitment to supporting our youth arts education programs and for a second year is the corporate sponsor of Cal Performances' presentation of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and AileyCamp at Cal Performances, a summer dance education program targeted to under-served an at-risk adolescents in our community.

In addition to the Ailey program and AileyCamp, WELLS FARGO was the corporate sponsor of Cal Performances' Directors Dinner with tenor Salvatore Licitra (February 2) and will be the Opening Night sponsor of the Stuttgart Ballet (March 27) and the post-performance reception with the artists and members of Cal Performances' Friends, Producers Circle, and Corporate Partners.

WELLS FARGO is again proud to be lending a hand in the community and touching individual lives. In 2001 alone, the company donated more than $66 million to help local programs, assisting nonprofit organizations nationwide. WELLS FARGO'S leadership in establishing AileyCamp in its first West Coast site here and its support of these remarkable talents in Cal Performances' 2002-03 season are but one dimension of this extraordinary corporate leader.

"Wells Fargo is committed to helping improve our local community and is proud to further our support of the arts," said Tim Silva, Wells Fargo Market President and Cal Performances Board member. "This special program helps enrich lives in the greater Bay Area. Our participation is one of countless examples in our 150 year history of Wells Fargo partnering to address specific needs in the community. We are very pleased to continue our sponsorship of Cal Performances."

Cal Performances recognizes WELLS FARGO'S generous ongoing commitment to programs that bring world-class performing arts experiences to youth in our community and artistic programming that would not otherwise be possible without their generous support.

Linda Rawlings makes major gift to Cal Performances

Cal Performances has received a major gift from Board of Trustees member Linda E. Rawlings and is pleased to announce that the season's dance series will be named in her honor to recognize her generous support.

Passionate about dance throughout her life, Rawlings has been both a strong advocate for, and an active participant in, the Bay Area dance community. She taught choreography at San Francisco Dance Theater, co-founded Express Dance Company, founded New Shoes, Old Souls Dance Company, and has produced and performed with the Yoga Garden Dancers and other groups. In addition to serving on Cal Performances' board, Linda is a board member of the Mark Morris Dance Group which performs annually at Zellerbach Hall.

Between dance activities Linda has been a securities trader, compliance officer and partner of a San Francisco investment firm, and co- owner and president of Bay Area-based food manufacturer and distributor, Otis Spunkmeyer, Inc. She holds both an MBA from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and a masters in journalism from UC Berkeley. Linda currently resides in Hong Kong where she is pursuing business, writing, and performance opportunities.

San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown and clothier Wilkes Bashford were on hand to applaud Linda Rawling's major gift to Cal Performances.
