Beloved
by some of the best-known composers, conductors, and playwrights
of our time, charismatic soprano Audra McDonald has distinguished
herself as a singer and actress of equal acclaim (Emmy Award-nominated
for her performance opposite Emma Thompson in HBO's Wit).
Since bursting on the Broadway scene in Nicholas Hytner's 1994 Carousel,
McDonald has gone on to win near universal praise for her lush soprano
voice, elegant musicianship, and dazzling stage presence and has
made music history as the first three-time Tony Award winner under
the age of 30. Often hailed as the future of Broadway musical theater,
her range stretches from low and bluesy to richly operatic, and
her prodigious talents are often compared to the young Barbra Streisand
or Judy Garland. When she sings, "you find yourself suspended
in that magical zone where time goes out the window and your only
reason for being is to listen," says The Washington Post.
