"Ballet
lovers have just glimpsed perfection," said the San Francisco
Chronicle after the legendary Moscow-based Bolshoi astounded
audiences during its triumphant U.S. tour in 2000. A unique and
beloved force in world culture, the Bolshoi is synonymous with Russian
ballet at its finest and has set standards of flawless technique
and bravura spectacle since its creation 225 years ago. In Russian
"Bolshoi" means "big," and to this day, the
Bolshoi lives up to its reputation for lavish, larger-than-life
productions, touring with more than half of its 300-member corps
de ballet, and displaying its hallmark ability to imbue every gesture
with dramatic impact and make a powerful and emotional connection
with an audience. Bolshoi brings to Cal Performances a fully staged
production of one of the most revered of all classical ballets,
Swan Lake.
