Gamelan Sekar Jaya's
innovative works have delighted audiences all the way from New York
City to remote Balinese villages. The 50-member ensemble of musicians
and dancers teams up once again with some of Bali's most brilliant
artists, including several from Bali's National Academy of the Arts,
for a command return performance of Kawit Legong: Prince Karna's
Dream. By turns "sensuous, exotic and charming (San Francisco
Chronicle), this dramatic realization of a centuries-old Balinese
legend tells a story surrounding the birth of Legong, the
famed "dance of the celestial nymphs" first seen in a meditative
dream by a 19th-century prince. A striking array of projected giant-screen
shadow lighting effects created by San Francisco's ShadowLight
Productions highlights the multiple dimensions of the Balinese
universe, from the "seen" world of humans to the "unseen" magical
world of the gods.
