Dubbed the "West
African Sinatra," Grammy-nominated Youssou N'Dour is African
pop's greatest global star, "a singer with a voice so extraordinary
that the history of Africa seems locked inside it," raves Rolling
Stone magazine. In a career spanning more than 20 years, he
has transformed the world-music landscape by mixing elements of
Senegal's traditional mbalax percussion and soulful vocals
with Afro-Cuban rhythms and strains of American jazz and funk. A
musical diplomat, he writes urgent, engaging lyrics that transcend
boundaries of language and culture, and his collaborations with
Western artists such as Branford Marsalis, Sting, Wyclef Jean, and
Peter Gabriel have attracted an increasingly diverse, cross-cultural
audience to his explosive style. Together with his 10-member band
Super Étoile, one of Africa's most popular live bands, the
Senegalese superstar routinely has audiences on their feet, thinking
globally and dancing locally to his irresistible percussive beat
and soaring vocals.
