The first Russian orchestra to
perform at the Vatican and in Israel, the Russian National Orchestra is a frequent
guest at the world's major arts festivals including those in Edinburgh, Lucerne,
Sydney and Colmar, and opened the 1996 Olympics Arts Festival in Atlanta. The
orchestra's extensive discography, recorded under such acclaimed conductors as
Mikhail Pletnev, Mstislav Rostropovich, Kent Nagano and Alexander Vedernikov,
has garnered the ensemble extraordinary reviews. Gramophone listed the
RNO recording of Tchaikovsky's Pathétique as the best in history
and declared its recording of Prokofiev's Cinderella "one of the best
records of the 1990s." The acclaimed ensemble returns to Cal Performances
with a program that includes Gordon Getty's "dramatic, exciting, and tautly
constructed tone poem"(Musical Opinion), Joan and the Bells,
a cantata for soprano, baritone, chorus and orchestra based on the Joan of Arc
story.
Program:
