Just as
surely as Fokine and Balanchine before him, William Forsythe has changed ballet
as an art form. Since becoming artistic director of the Ballett Frankfurt in 1984,
he has created a prolific series of challenging original works for his company,
using a contemporary aesthetic that is densely theatrical, yet ravishingly pared-down,
and each of his audacious works for Ballett Frankfurt has been considered a major
and provocative dance event. While Forsythe's choreography also enriches the repertoire
of most of the world's major ballet companies, this tour marks the first time
in over 15 years his own company has been seen in the U.S. outside of New York,
and due to Forsythe's announced intention to leave Ballett Frankfurt in August
of 2004, is most likely one of the last opportunities to see the great choreographer's
original artistry performed by those dancers who know it best.
