"The arts ignite the
mind. They give you the possibility to dream and hope," says Arthur Mitchell,
who founded his now world-renowned company back in 1969 as a tribute to Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. A neo-classical company, Dance Theatre of Harlem possesses a
repertoire unlike any other: "hip, recognizably American and plugged into
the streets where it was born, yet written in the centuries-old traditions of
European classical dance," says The Times of London. The company brings
an exciting new work for their Cal Performances appearance: the Bay Area premiere
of a new "Blues ballet" based on the groundbreaking 1946 Broadway hit
St. Louis Woman. Featuring the brilliant choreography of Michael Smuin,
costumes by Emmy Award-winning designer Willa Kim, and almost all of the original
Johnny Mercer/Harold Arlen high-spirited score (including such classics as "Come
Rain Or Come Shine," "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home," "Legalize
My Name," and "A Woman's Prerogative"), St. Louis Woman
is the perfect showcase for the superb talents of Mitchell's quintessentially
American company. Patron Information:
