"Music brings parents and kids together," says Dan Zanes, former lead singer and songwriter for the indie-rock band the Del Fuegos, who has found his new calling creating wonderfully infectious all-ages music for kids and "kid sympathizers" alike. Featuring hip, inventive renditions of American-roots standards and his own winsome folk-inspired tunes, Zanes' first family-music album, Rocket Ship Beach, was hailed as a breakthrough in cool kids music, and along with acclaimed follow-up releases Family Dance and Night Time! featured appearances by such talented musician-friends as Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega, Lou Reed, Rosanne Cash, and Aimee Mann. In concert with his spirited touring group, the Rocket Ship Revue, Zanes exhibits the same low-key, playful exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing.
