Tenor sax titan Michael Brecker and masterful trumpeter Roy Hargrove headlined (along with pianist Herbie Hancock) Cal Performances' 2002 sold-out Directions in Music tribute to the legendary jazz greats Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Representing two generations of musicians whose styles and sounds have been equally influenced by the powerhouse jazz forefathers they honored, Brecker and Hargrove return for a concert with their own musical improvisations and inspirations at center stage. A seven-time Grammy Award winner and the first musician to win both Best Jazz Instrumental Performance and Best Jazz Instrumental Solo awards two years in a row, Brecker reigns as one of the leading players on the jazz scene today. Relative newcomer Hargrove already boasts an impressive catalog of 10 critically-hailed albums — including his Grammy Award-winning 1998 release Habana — and as a soloist, is leading a resurgence of widespread interest in acoustic jazz.
