the summer of 1954, Newport Jazz Festival made music history as the first weekend-long
outdoor festival devoted entirely to jazz at its finest. In the half century since,
Newport Jazz has presented a veritable pantheon of jazz immortals alongside rising
young stars literally thousands of jazz artists, and virtually all of the
greats. This 50th anniversary celebration of the venerable jazz institution features
a multimedia journey through highlights of the festival's now legendary history,
as well as live performances by a roster of today's jazz greats, including pianist
and composer Cedar Walton; Grammy-nominated guitarist Howard Alden; bassist Peter
Washington, Grammy- and Emmy Award-nominated trumpeter and composer Terrence Blanchard;
master of the tenor saxophone and flute and six-time Grammy-nominated soloist
Lew Tabackin; clarinetist Ken Peplowski; drummer Kareem Riggins; and singing sensation
Lea DeLaria. (Artist roster is subject to change.) Program:
