¡Cubanismo! Cubanismo!
Fri, May 7, 2004, 8 pm

Please Note:
Due to visa problems, ¡Cubanismo! has canceled their performance scheduled for Friday, May 7, at Zellerbach Hall. We are pleased to announce however that Cal Performances will instead present a performance by the Afro-Cuban group Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca on the same date, time and location. (For more information on that event, please click here)

If you currently hold tickets for ¡Cubanismo!, they will be honored for the Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca performance. If you wish to attend that performance, simply use the tickets you currently have; the date, time, venue, and seating will remain the same. You do not need to contact the Ticket Office if you plan to attend the Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca performance. You may also apply the value of your tickets toward another Cal Performances event in the 2003/04 season, or request a refund. To make arrangements for an exchange or refund, please call our Ticket Office at 510-642-9988 by no later than 5:00 pm on April 23, 2004. (If you are requesting a refund, please provide credit card number and expiration date) Please do not destroy the tickets you currently hold for ¡Cubanismo!, as those tickets will be needed in order to receive a refund or make a ticket exchange. If you do not request a refund or exchange by the April 23 deadline, we will presume you are attending the replacement event on May 7.

Jesús Alemañy's 15-piece band, comprised of an all-star roster of Cuban musicians, has played a major role in reviving the island's sizzling sounds and fiery rhythms. The release of their self-titled debut album in 1997 thrust Cuban music into the American musical mainstream, and their first American tour solidified their reputation as the greatest Cuban dance orchestra to visit the U.S. since the genre's heyday in the 1950s. ¡Cubanismo! performs a tight and dynamic combination of elegant son — Cuban roots music dating back to the early 20th century — and freewheeling jazz, arranged in Havana's descarga (jam session) tradition. Danceable from start to finish, every ¡Cubanismo! concert is a veritable feast of rhythms and a spirited journey to the heart of Latin music — paying homage to the past while leading Cuban music into the future.
