A string quartet in form but a band in spirit, Ethel is unencumbered by convention, overflowing with talent, and as likely to be heard in a club as in a concert hall. The ensemble is comprised of four of New York's busiest freelance musicians whose diverse musical backgrounds include performances and recordings with the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Bang on a Can, Sheryl Crow, Reba McEntire, and Yo-Yo Ma. Their distinct, riveting sound on amplified violin, viola, and cello, and their penchant for improvisation, combines the potency of a rock band with the technical precision of the finest chamber groups. Their self-titled debut recording has met with critical acclaim, and their ebullient sound can be heard on new releases with Rickie Lee Jones and Joe Jackson.
