BERKELEY EDGE FEST This four concert showcase of new and contemporary music features minimalist Terry Riley's 70th birthday concert, the work of visionary composer John Zorn, plus three world premieres.

Listed by the London Sunday Times as one of the 1000 Makers of the 20th century, Riley is joined by musician friends in a musical celebration of his 70th birthday.

Featuring performances of maverick composer John Zorn's Walpurgisnacht and Le Momo. Plus, the Masada String Trio performs an excerpt from Zorn's popular Masada project that integrates elements of klezmer and Middle Eastern music with jazz, avant-garde, and classical to create a new form of Jewish music.

The Crowley Quartet performs Zorn's tour-de force work Necronomicon. Plus, additional excerpts from Zorn's Masada project. "Full of precipitous contrasts: skittering pizzicato, haunting legato cries, fortissimo climaxes, hushed interludes," says JazzTimes.

An exciting evening of three world premieres written expressly for the Festival by composer and UC Berkeley faculty member Jorge Liderman and recent UCB graduate alumni Fernando Benadon and Reynold Tharp. The work of Keeril Makan and Adirana Verdie, also graduate alumni of Berkeley's distinguished Department of Music, will be presented. Also, the Berkeley Contemporary Chamber Players, under the direction of David Milnes, will perform the American premiere of Liderman's Flautando.
