"This, one senses, is a group in which every member is prepared to live the music to the fullest, and the result is a joy from start to finish," says Gramophone of this European musical success story. Founded in 1982 by young musicians from various East Berlin orchestras, and dedicated to meticulous period-instrument interpretations of Baroque music, their democratic approach to music-making was a courageous display of solidarity and met with official scorn and tremendous public enthusiasm. After Germany's reunification, the Akademie skyrocketed to fame when international audiences heard their extraordinary talents for the first time. The orchestra became a regular guest at Daniel Barenboim's Berliner Staatsoper, and acclaimed recordings (including an album of Gluck arias with Cecilia Bartoli) and appearances followed at such major concert houses as London's Wigmore Hall and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. Their much-anticipated first U.S. tour will afford Cal Performances audiences the rare opportunity to experience Baroque music at its most sublime and alive.
