"We often hear about the jazz-like improvisational freedom of Baroque instrumental music, but it's rare to hear it so exuberantly in action," said the San Francisco Chronicle of the sensational Italian ensemble Il Giardino Armonico. Founded in Milan in 1985, this group of virtuoso soloists, led by renowned conductor and flutist Giovanni Antonini, has skyrocketed to fame by taking a contemporary approach to some of the best-known 17th- and 18th-century compositions, transforming Baroque music into a living, vibrant creation. They performed to tremendous critical acclaim at Cal Performances in 2001 with superstar mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, with whom they recorded their Grammy Award-winning Vivaldi Album, and returned for a sold-out concert in 2003, showing even more fans why Il Giardino Armonico has been called the most dynamic and adventurous period-instrument group playing today.
