In 1781, the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig adopted the motto Res severa verum gaudium ("Real pleasure is a serious matter"), and since then, the legendary ensemble has played an integral role in the development of classical music as we know it. Beethoven's Triple Concerto and Fifth Piano Concerto, Schubert's Symphony in C, and Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony are but a few of the major works that received their premieres at the storied Gewandhaus, which continues to forge its rich heritage into a third century of great music-making. Former San Francisco Symphony music director Herbert Blomstedt has led the over 100-member ensemble since 1998, thrilling audiences in Leipzig and around the world with traditional and contemporary programs of exuberant vitality and virtuosity.
Program: The Orchestra's program includes Brahms' Symphony No. 2 and Piano Concerto No. 1, featuring acclaimed pianist Garrick Ohlsson.
