Lang Lang, piano

Venue: Zellerbach Hall

Price: $32/$42/$56

Subscription Series: Recital Series A

Embodying a rare combination of exceptional skill and natural charisma, 22-year-old Chinese pianist Lang Lang is a genuine musical legend in the making. Taking first prize at age 13 at the Tchaikovsky International Young Musicians' Competition, his breakthrough performance occurred when he replaced an indisposed André Watts at the Ravinia Festival's "Gala of the Century" — and left audiences and critics alike in awe. "With his technical fireworks, interpretive passion and imagination, and unalloyed enthusiasm for every note, he's one of the most exciting talents to emerge in years," raved the Baltimore Sun. Lang Lang has since progressed from one triumphant appearance to the next, including performances with all "big five" American orchestras, successful Carnegie Hall and BBC Proms debuts in 2001, and the widely acclaimed 2003 release of his Deutsche Grammophon recording with Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Program:
Mozart/Piano Sonata No. 10 in C major, K. 330; Chopin/Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Op. 58; Schumann/Kinderszenen ("Scenes From Childhood"), Op. 15; Rachmaninoff/Two Preludes; Liszt/Petrarch: Sonnet No. 104, Annees de pelerinage No. 2; Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, S244 (Horowitz Transcription)
