A stand-out even among her prodigiously talented classmates in the Mariinsky Theatre's prestigious vocalists program, Ekaterina Semenchuk caught the attention in 1999 of the program's artistic director, Larissa Gergieva, who knew immediately she was in the presence of a future star. Semenchuk has fulfilled this early promise with great aplomb, evoking comparisons to the great mezzo-sopranos of yesterday in regular appearances with the Kirov Opera, an acclaimed recital at London's Wigmore Hall, and emotionally charged turns as Olga in Eugene Onegin at the Aix-en-Provence Festival and in the title role in Carmen with the Opera Company of Philadelphia. She makes her Bay Area debut accompanied by her mentor Gergieva, a peerless interpreter of the Russian repertoire, who accompanied Daniil Shtoda at Cal Performances in 2002.
