This high-energy troupe had Cal Performances audiences literally dancing in the aisles during prior appearances. Named Brazil's best dance company three times since its inception in 1988, the exuberant 38-member ensemble of dancers and musicians presents a heart-stopping display of color, movement, and polyrhythmic passion, blending the diverse artistic elements that make Brazil's northern state of Bahia the heart of the country's African cultural scene. The company performs an eclectic repertory of folkloric dances of African origin that are Bahia's special heritage slave dances, martial-arts inspired capoeira and maculêlê, carnival, and samba, all set to the propulsive beat of Afro-Brazilian music.
