This celebration of the vibrant musical traditions of the Gypsy (or Roma) features the return of Taraf de Haïdouks ("band of brigands"), who have taken the global-music world (and Cal Performances audiences in 2001!) by storm with its invigorating mix of medieval ballads, Turkish-flavored dance tunes, and Balkan vocal strains that are the heart and soul of Gypsy music. A 12-member band of musicians and singers from the small Romanian village of Clejani, the ensemble was the first real village band to tour and record authentic Gypsy music. Their fiery intensity, infectious camaraderie, and musical virtuosity have won them such devoted champions as Yehudi Menuhin, Kronos Quartet, and French director Tony Gatlif, who cast them in his award-winning film Latcho Drom. They are joined by virtuoso guitarist Biréli Lagrène, a master of Gypsy-style playing, who is widely considered the artistic heir to Gypsy jazz guitar legend Django Reinhardt.
