"The only way to innovate within flamenco is by being personal," says dancer and choreographer Andrés Marín, proclaiming his deep-rooted belief in flamenco as a living, evolving art form. Simultaneously defying the constraints of traditional flamenco while remaining true to the art form's pure rhythms and soulful roots, this second-generation flamenco artist (the son of dancer Andrés Marín, Sr. and singer Isabel Vargas) has created a physical vocabulary altogether his own — passionate, intense, and thoroughly original. "Andrés moves in a way no male flamenco dancer has ever moved before," says the Los Angeles Times, which cited his newly formed company's debut production of Más Allá Del Tiempo ("Beyond Time") at the 2002 World Flamenco Festival as one of the year's most important performances. In this fast-paced, varied, and intensely musical 90-minute work, the musicians, singers, and dancers of Compañía Flamenca Andrés Marín explore five flamenco styles and traditions as expressed through Marín's highly personal aesthetic.
