"To call a performance by Sweet Honey in the Rock supremely entertaining is barely to scratch the surface," says the Washington Post. This legendary Grammy Award-winning female a cappella group has created a unique and uplifting sound that is universal in its appeal, delivering a message of hope for a better world. Drawing its inspiration from the widest possible range of African-American vocal styles, Sweet Honey in the Rock finds the powerful and poetic in traditional and original chants, hymns, raps, spirituals, and ballads all charged with its members' singularly powerful and expressive voices and "sweet as honey" harmonies. The group celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2003 with the release of another critically acclaimed album, The Women Gather, and a renewed commitment to use harmony to unite people against injustice.

Through song and discussion, workshop participants will explore the historical, social, and political values embedded in the music; the role of cultural and spiritual traditions; responses to and influences on political and social struggle; and the personal significance of a communal experience. Open to the public, this workshop is designed to develop community through the shared experience of singing music from the African American tradition.
