Founded in 1937 by the great choreographer and ballet master Pavlo Virsky, this acclaimed troupe of professionally trained ballet dancers celebrates the spirit of a people through dance. The company displays a trademark athleticism and bravura technique while continuing to embrace the beauty and wisdom of Ukraine's rich dance traditions gravity-defying split-leaps and spins, mazurka steps, loose-hipped kicks, squatting Cossack martial dances, and the visual splendor of elaborately embroidered and beribboned costumes from many regions of the country. Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times chose the Virsky as one of her top 10 dance events of 1998, writing that "to watch the fabulous virtuosity of this company's young men and women...[is] to appreciate great dancing by any definition."
