Composer Portrait: John Adams
Alarm Will Sound

Sun, Mar 5, '06, 3 pm

Venue: Hertz Hall

Price: $32

Subscription Series: Choose-Your-Own, Winter/Spring Mini Series

Presented in collaboration with the Miller Theatre at Columbia University, Cal Performances' Composer Portraits offer the rare opportunity to dive in and immerse yourself in the works of some of the great composers of our time. Each concert focuses on the works of a single composer, performed by soloists and ensembles of international standing.

Bay Area audiences need no introduction to the work of John Adams (b. 1947)—one of the best known and most-often-performed of America's composers. As Andrew Porter wrote in The New Yorker, Adams is the creator of a "flexible new language capable of producing large-scale works that are both attractive and strongly fashioned." Called "the future of classical music" by The New York Times, Alarm Will Sound is a 22-member band committed to innovative performances and recordings of contemporary music. Founded in 2001, it has already established a reputation for performing demanding music with energetic virtuosity.

Program: Adams/China Gates (1977); Chamber Symphony (1992); Gnarly Buttons (1996); Scratchband (1997)
