Borrowing its name from the renowned string orchestra of the court of the French kings, Les Violons du Roy specializes in the vast chamber orchestra repertoire, performed in the style most appropriate to each era. Its Cal Performances concert features Czech mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená. "One of those voices that seem to go straight to the heart," says Gramophone.

Program: Rameau/Suite from Dardanus; Rebel/Les Elemens; plus additional opera and concert arias by Gluck.

UC Berkeley musicologist Rebekah Ahrendt delves into a key debate in early music performace practice, anticpiating the February 12 concert by Les Violons du Roy under the baton of Bernard Labadie. Key Notes Lectures are held at the Musical Offering Classical Record Shop and Café, 2430 Bancroft Way, across the street from Zellerbach Hall.
