When Masaaki Suzuki founded Bach Collegium Japan in 1990, more than a few eyebrows were raised. Would it make any more sense for Japanese musicians to master European period instruments and historical performance practices than it would for Western performers to create "authentic" gagaku ensembles? Well, 15 years later, few voice those reservations after the Collegium's astounding succession of concert performances and award-winning recordings. Among today's leading interpreters of the music of J.S. Bach and his contemporaries, the ensemble returns to Cal Performances (following its Bay Area recital debut here in 2003) with an all-Bach instrumental program, featuring Maestro Suzuki at the harpsichord.
This presentation is made possible, in part, by the generous support of the Sz-Wing Ü Memorial Fund.
Program: J.S. Bach/Orchestra Suite No. 2 in B Minor for Flute and Strings, BWV 1067; Harpsichord Concerto in D Minor, BWV 1052; Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra in D minor, BWV 1043; Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D Major, BWV 1050
