Perennial favorites in Berkeley, Barcelona-based Hespèrion XXI, and the vocalists of La Capella Reial de Catalunya now make a second appearance on Cal Performances' Centennial Season in addition to their sold-out March 11 performance. Led by viol virtuoso and conductor Jordi Savall and joined by soprano Montserrat Figueras, the ensembles mark the 400th anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote with a program that examines the many musical references in the Spanish poet and musician's celebrated novel. Combining recitations of passages from the written work with instrumental and vocal music, this colorful musical journey, conceived and meticulously researched by Savall himself, richly displays the great musical treasure of the day that Cervantes preserved in his classic and enduring tale.
Program: works by Luis del Milán, Juan Vasquez, Du Bailly, Diego Pisador, Joan Arañés, and more
