Credited with possessing "the same precision and wordless communication as a longstanding string quartet" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer), the Yukimi Kambe Viol Consort was organized in Japan in 1983, its aim to perform both traditional repertoire for viols and a wide selection of contemporary music. Hundreds of concerts later, the ensemble has won international recognition for music-making of the highest caliber. The artists are known both for traditional viol music (including works by Purcell, Gibbons, Bach, and Charpentier) and for introducing new pieces to the repertoire, and have already given premieres of more than 80 compositions written expressly for the Consort.
This presentation is made possible, in part, by the generous support of The Japan Foundation Performing Arts JAPAN program.
Program:
East Meets West works by Etenraku (Japanese court music), Machaut, Issac, Cabezon, Salvatore, Lawes, Purcell, and Boyvin; plus J.S.
