Turkish multi-instrumentalist Burhan Öçal has spent his career bridging the musical cultures of East and West, ancient and modern. Regarded as the greatest darbuka (finger drum) player alive today, he is also an accomplished composer and a walking encyclopedia of Arabic instruments. His 2006 international tour features the Gypsy Diplomats, described as "the mother of all Turkish/Balkan dance bands," showcasing music that, while modernized with the use of electric instruments, retains its roots in old village folk tunes and is characterized by fast speeds, impossible rhythms, and plummeting key changes.
