Maria del Mar Bonet & Mônica Salmaso

Sat, Mar 11, '06, 8 pm

Venue: Zellerbach Hall B

Price: $22/$30/$40

Subscription Series: Choose-Your-Own

For more than 30 years, the warmth and passionate elegance of Maria del Mar Bonet's voice has seduced audiences around the world. A symbol of national pride—she defiantly sang in her native Catalan before a ban on the language was lifted with Franco's death—the Majorcan singer is one of the great proponents of Mediterranean song. With the release of her album, Iaiá, Brazilian balladeer Mônica Salmaso burst onto the international scene, winning legions of instant fans. Whether serving up a set of infectious sambas or paying musical tribute to the river and sea goddesses of Brazil's African-related spiritualism, Salmaso is "an artist to be watched, one with extraordinary potential" (Los Angeles Times).
