Workshop: Improvisation in the Moment with
Nitanju Bolade Casel
Sat, Feb 25, 3-5 pm
The Jazzschool, 2087 Addison Street in Berkeley
In this workshop, breath, space, movement, natural rhythms and harmony are brought together to create music in the moment. Participants will use traditional African music, blues, gospel, jazz, and spoken word combined with current social and political thoughts and concerns as the tools to build a foundation for new work, establishing a sound unique to the individuals present. No formal training is required.
Nitanju Bolade Casel joined Sweet Honey in the Rock in 1984, after four years studying, performing, and cultural organizing in Dakar, Senegal. She has introduced the rhythms of hip-hop and jazz to Sweet Honey's palette through her compositions and vocal talents. Casel is currently co-director, with her sister, Aisha Kahlil, of First World Productions, a cultural and educational organization in the performance arts.
