Sweet Honey in the Rock

Fri, Feb 24, '06, 8 pm

Venue: Zellerbach Hall B

Price: $24/$34/$46

Subscription Series: Choose-Your-Own

From Psalm 81:16 comes the promise of being fed by honey out of a rock. Honey—an ancient substance, sweet and nurturing. Rock—an elemental strength, enduring the winds of time. Founded in 1973, Sweet Honey in the Rock still endures, more than 30 years later—an internationally renowned
a cappella ensemble that is a vital and innovative presence in communities of conscience around the world. Together, the women of the ensemble create music out of the rich textures of African-American traditions, capturing the diverse sounds of blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip hop, ancient lullabies, and jazz improvisation.

Please note that this performance will have sign-language interpretation.

Workshop: Improvisation in the Moment with
Nitanju Bolade Casel
Sat, Feb 25, 3-5 pm
The Jazzschool, 2087 Addison Street in Berkeley

In this workshop, breath, space, movement, natural rhythms and harmony are brought together to create music in the moment. Participants will use traditional African music, blues, gospel, jazz, and spoken word combined with current social and political thoughts and concerns as the tools to build a foundation for new work, establishing a sound unique to the individuals present. No formal training is required.

Nitanju Bolade Casel joined Sweet Honey in the Rock in 1984, after four years studying, performing, and cultural organizing in Dakar, Senegal. She has introduced the rhythms of hip-hop and jazz to Sweet Honey's palette through her compositions and vocal talents. Casel is currently co-director, with her sister, Aisha Kahlil, of First World Productions, a cultural and educational organization in the performance arts.
