What do these symbols mean?
Taiwan's leading contemporary dance company returns to Berkeley (the troupe was a massive hit with Zellerbach patrons in 2003) with its awe-inspiring blend of Eastern and Western dance styles. The ensemble will perform Wild Cursive, the final section of Lin Hwai-min's much-acclaimed trilogy inspired by calligraphy. This astonishing new work is influenced by kuang chao (wild calligraphy), considered the pinnacle of Chinese cursive aesthetics, in which all the rules are broken and the characters freed from any set form. The Cloud Gate dancers' spellbinding movements echo the serpentine lines of the black ink as it flows down cascading streams of rice paper onto the stage. "On every level, Lin's company is superb. Accomplished and striking, as rigorous as it is disciplined" (The Times, London).
