What do these symbols mean?
If the name suggests traditionalism, witnessing a performance by the "stunning" (The New York Times) Lyon Opera Ballet is sure to overturn all expectations. Under the direction of Greek-born Yorgos Loukos, the troupe has radically re-envisioned its role in the dance world, building a repertory by the world's finest neoclassic and postmodern choreographers. The company's 2006 Zellerbach Hall performances feature works by three pioneering female European choreographers: Maguy Marin's Groosland, which marries effortless whimsy with the music of Bach's Second Brandenburg Concerto; Anne Theresa de Keersmaeker's Grande Fuge, a brilliant work by this groundbreaking Belgian dance-maker, performed to Beethoven's score; and a new work by forceful choreographer Sasha Waltz, whose own company has performed twice at Cal Performances to great acclaim.
Program:
Maguy Marin/Groosland, set to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos Nos 2 & 3; Anne Theresa de Keersmaeker/Die Grosse Fuge, set to Beethoven's Op. 133 for String Quartet; Sasha Waltz/Fantasie, set to Schubert's Fantasie in F minor
