What do these symbols mean?
The 2002 debut of the Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic under Maestro Lorin Maazel stunned the European music community. First, because few expected that it marked the emergence of a new, predominantly Italian, symphony orchestra, and second, because it featured at the podium one of the titans of 21st-century symphonic music. The ensemble's music director since 2004, Maazel has taken time from his busy schedule directing the New York Philharmonic to develop a close relationship with this talented ensemble, made up of the best young European players. Any appearance by a conductor of Maazel's stature marks a red-letter day at Cal Performances, but all the more so with an ensemble of such promise and distinction.
Program: Rossini/Overture to Il barbiere di Siviglia; Mendelssohn/Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, Italian; Respighi/Fontane di Roma and Pini di Roma
