With a celebrated history as one of the oldest musical institutions in Russia, the Kirov Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre was founded in the 18th century during the reign of Peter the Great. It is housed in St. Petersburg's famed Mariinsky Theatre, and enjoyed its "golden age" during the late 19th century. Today, under the vital artistic direction of Valery Gergiev, the Kirov has entered a new period of artistic inspiration. Gergiev and the ensemble are joined in Berkeley by Alexander Toradze, universally recognized as a masterful keyboardist in the grand Romantic tradition. "For the connoisseur of orchestral playing, this was an unforgettable experience" (The Glasgow Herald).
Program: Tchaikovsky/Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 23; Shostakovich/Symphony No. 11 in G Minor, Op. 103
