The Bay Area ensemble Gamelan Sekar Jaya—acclaimed internationally for its innovative work with the music and dance of Bali—performs the world premiere of a dazzling new dance drama. Created by an international team of artists through an intensive two-year exchange of ideas, historical perspectives, and modern dramatic techniques, Kali Yuga is a deep and moving artistic response to recent world conflicts, including those in Indonesia itself. Drawn from the ancient texts of the Mahabharata, the work explores the last of the four ages in Hindu philosophy and fuses traditional Balinese performance genres such as kecak (interlocking vocal chants) and topeng (masked dances) with modern techniques of video and lighting, set design, and computer-generated ambient sounds. Directed by Ellen Sebastian Chang, with choreography by I Wayan Dibia, poetry by Goenawan Mohamad, music by Wayne Vitale and Made Arnawa, and ten dancers including I Ketut Rina and Tjokorda Istri Putra Padmini.
