A key founder of modern Afro-pop, Keita commands attention with his unforgettable live performances, soaring vocals, and emotion-packed songs. Dubbed the "golden voice of Africa," Keita forged his reputation with Rail Band and Les Ambassadeurs, but gradually moved away from re-Africanized Latin tunes to explore his Mande birthright. (He is a direct descendent of the warrior king who founded the Malian empire in the 13th century.) Since then, his work has blended the traditional griot music of his childhood with other West African influences from Guinea, the Ivory Coast, and Senegal, along with the music of Spain, Portugal, and Cuba.
